Pedro Varela García, former mayor of Queréndaro, Michoacán, was shot multiple times while in an orchard on his property. He was severely injured and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Reports indicate that the 62-year-old was hit by at least four bullets, including one in the chest, one in a shoulder, and two in his legs.
Varela García served as mayor of Queréndaro twice, first from 1993 to 1995 and again from 1999 to 2001. Some media reports suggest he was attacked by a neighbor following a dispute, but official details surrounding the incident remain unclear as authorities have not verified this information.
The Michoacán State Attorney General's Office has initiated investigations into the shooting to locate the assailant. This incident comes amid rising violence in Queréndaro, which has recently witnessed several violent acts, including an armed attack on a police station in early February that resulted in the deaths of three officers. In a separate incident, a police officer in Apatzingán was killed at his home during his day off by armed individuals.
